As I have read the story called “All year of her life” which was written by Morley Callaghan. This story is about a boy named Alfred who stole a lipstick and two tubes of toothpaste from Mr. Carr, the owner of the store. Mr. Carr was nearly calling the police, but eventually Alfred’s mom was so calm and that made Alfred get surprise. She talked to Mr. Carr so nice and finally Mr. Carr let them go back home with the words “Tell you son not to come back here again.” Mr. Carr is also a nice guy, even Alfred stole his stuffs, and he still let him go.
We have a discussion in the class and we were talking about what if the character changes. What would happen if Mr. Higgins came? Would he do the same thing as Mrs. Higgins did? What if Mr. or Mrs. Higgins is not American and they are Asian? Would it be different?
Of course, the story will be change. The father might be angry and punch Mr. Carr because he might believe in his son and thinks that Mr. Carr lied to him. But what if Mr. Higgins is an Asian? I think he would be calmer.
So it means that if the story has changed any main character, the story would be change.
When I read the story, I used the reading strategies called “I guess a prediction what the text is about” I used this when his mom came and I thought that she would come and help Alfred and shout on Mr. Carr, but she didn’t do it. She was so calm to Mr. Carr.
I also check my understanding what I read new text. When he saw his mom was drinking a tea in the kitchen and everything looks different. She is calmer, but not like before who goes to the drug store.
